Biography: I was always a very inquisitive child. I would create hobbies for myself all the time, just to keep myself entertained and challenged; and also I was searching for answers. As my mother would tell it, “Marlo loved taking things apart as a kid, to see how they worked; but he couldn’t put them back together again once it was in pieces, but he wasn’t happy until he found out what made the things he had function”. I remember being 12 years old and being infatuated with cameras. My dad had a 35mm camera with interchangeable lenses that he’d use for family moments and vacations. I was so impressed by that camera, I asked for one the following Christmas. The rest was history… For college I went to Clark Atlanta University and got an art degree in graphic design. During that time I would assist commercial photographers around town, shoot pictures as much as I could afford; which wasn’t many (this was expensive film days!!), and try to find my calling within the sea of an already abundant pool of photographers in the Atlanta area. |
Biography
Cont'd: I landed within the early 90’s up and coming Neo-soul / Yin Yang Café music scene of Atlanta. I photographed and became friends with many of the artists from that scene; thus my style was initially born. I’ve never been satisfied with just one type of photography though; and my interest in photojournalism, fine art, traveling and the mysterious world around us has moved my work to new places and directions over time. Simply being alone walking the streets with one of my cameras does wonders for my spirit… “We have a choice to become simple recorders of the everyday, or make art from the mundane and mystical, that shows a level of insight and investigation that hints towards the enchanted, rips through the soul and reveals something that the eyes can't explain, but the heart knows well. That’s what I hope to have achieved once my internal camera stops clicking…” -Marlo Herring |
